Kathmandu, 22 May: Harka Sampang, an independent candidate has been elected mayor of the Dharan Sub Metropolitan City by defeating the alliance candidate and UML candidate.
Harka defeated the alliance candidate from the Nepali Congress Kishor Rai with a margin of more than 5,000 votes. Harka got 20,821 while his nearest rival Kishor Rai got 16,059 votes.
UML’s Manju Bhandari Subedi came third with 12,825 votes.
According to the Election Commission, Aindra Bikram Begha of the CPN (Maoist Center) won the post of deputy mayor securing 20,510 votes. His nearest rival Padam Prasad Limbu got 17,606 votes.
The victory of independent candidates in urban areas is the reflection of the failure of the present political system, say observers.
The Kathmanduites are also likely to get independent candidate Balen Shah as the mayor.
